The Registry is one aspect of windows system that I would advise one to stay away from. As an experienced windows user since the inception of windows 3.0, I still make some oversight mistakes when editing the Registry.
I recently made some Registry Entries on my XP and I forgot to close some of the entries and it resulted into numerous blue screen episodes that made me to do a restore point. Thanks to a Registry tool that made it the restoration easier, I would have crashed the system if I have done it manually!

Scan your disk regularly for errors and defragment the disk also. With increase use of video and graphics files in programs, hard disks are prone now to fragmented space.
Remove unneeded and uninstall program files. Some program leave their uninstall program files on your hard disk – a potential for most of these adware and spyware programs to invade your PC when they need to market similar programs or newer versions
Run your anti virus at the end of every working day. Use the scheduler to do this
